Patient Moving and Handling for Healthcare Professionals

The Patient Moving and Handling course is designed for healthcare professionals who are required to safely move and assist patients in a range of clinical and care settings.

Aligned with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Manual Handling Regulations 1993 and 2007, this course provides the knowledge and practical skills necessary to reduce the risk of injury to both patients and staff. It supports safe systems of work and promotes evidence-based handling techniques in line with current workplace safety standards.

Requirements

  • There are no formal prerequisites.
  • Participants must be physically able to perform a range of patient moving and handling techniques during practical sessions.

Course Description

This programme provides a comprehensive understanding of both the theory and practical application of safe patient handling.

  • Biomechanics and mechanisms of injury
  • Flexibility and ergonomic principles
  • Risk assessment in patient handling scenarios
  • Basic principles of lifting and movement
  • Log roll technique
  • Assisting a patient to sit up in bed
  • Turning a patient using sliding sheets
  • Moving a patient up the bed using sliding sheets
  • Assisting a patient to the edge of the bed
  • Supporting a patient to stand
  • Transferring a patient from bed to chair
  • Managing the falling patient
  • Correct use of hoists and slings

Participants will complete practical demonstrations to ensure competence in each technique.


Duration

The course duration is approximately 4 hours.


Assessment

Participants are assessed through:

  • Practical demonstration of patient moving and handling techniques
  • A written assessment

All required movements must be demonstrated safely and competently in order to pass.


Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive a Medicore certificate in Patient Moving and Handling valid for two years.


Renewal

Certification is valid for two years. To maintain qualification, participants must complete the full course again prior to expiry.
