Basic Life Support Instructor and PHECC CFR Community Instructor

The Basic Life Support and PHECC Cardiac First Response Community Instructor course is designed for healthcare professionals who wish to become certified instructors in Basic Life Support and CFR Community programmes.

This dual certification pathway enables successful candidates to deliver recognised training in CPR, AED use and emergency response skills. The programme prepares participants not only to perform life-saving interventions, but to teach, assess and certify others in accordance with awarding body standards.

Course Structure

The programme consists of:

  • Two days of classroom-based instructor training
  • A structured monitoring phase

During the monitoring phase, candidates must:

  1. Observe a First Aid Response course
  2. Assist in course delivery
  3. Deliver a FAR course under supervision

Successful completion of all monitored components is required for full instructor certification.

Course Details

Duration

  • Two days of classroom-based instructor training.
  • Followed by completion of instructor candidate monitored teaching sessions.

Total duration will depend on scheduling of monitored sessions.

Certification

Upon successful completion and approval, candidates will receive instructor certification enabling them to deliver:

  • Irish Heart Foundation Basic Life Support Provider courses
  • PHECC Cardiac First Response Community courses

Certification is subject to awarding body requirements and ongoing compliance.

Renewal

To maintain instructor status, candidates must comply with Irish Heart Foundation and PHECC recertification and update requirements, including periodic monitoring and attendance at update sessions where required.

Requirements

  • A healthcare background is required.
  • Candidates must hold current certification in Basic Life Support at the appropriate level.
  • Participants must demonstrate competence in CPR and AED skills prior to instructor training.
  • Adequate English language proficiency is required to deliver instruction and assessment.

Eligibility and prerequisite verification may be required prior to enrolment.

Method of delivery

The course is delivered through:

Training is delivered in English.

Monitoring and Qualification Process

Upon completion of the initial two-day programme, participants are designated as Instructor Candidates.

To achieve full instructor status, candidates must complete a three-step monitoring process:

  1. Observe a qualified instructor delivering a course
  2. Assist with course delivery under supervision
  3. Deliver a full course in the presence of an Irish Heart Foundation faculty member

Successful completion of all monitoring requirements is necessary for full certification.
