Aim of ACLS Training
- This ACLS Training course is specifically designed for all healthcare professionals involved in the provision of emergency cardiac care including those working in pre- hospital and in-hospital settings.
- Requirements - All students must hold a current Basic Life Support certificate. This should have been issued within the last 12 months. Students should be physically well enough to carry out chest compression on a manikin while standing and kneeling.
- Who's it for
- The Basic Life Support provider course is intended for participants who provide healthcare to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out of hospital settings. These healthcare providers may include (but are not limited to) Physicians, Medical Students, General Practitioners, General and Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Managers and Staff Nurses, Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, Dentists, Respiratory Therapists, Cardiac Technicians, Cardiac Rehabilitation Staff, Physiotherapists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, Nursing Students, Care Assistants and other Allied Healthcare Personnel.

- Method of Delivery
- The course is facilitated by a medical director and instructors who will use theory & practical lessons, role play, and a DVD to guide you through the course. The course is delivered through English. There is also a Blended Learning (HeartCode ACLS Part 1) option available for this course.
- Duration & Assessment
- Initial Provider Course requires approximately 10-12 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing. Renewal Course requires approximately 5-6 hours, including skills practice and skills testing. Students will be required to show skills competency in all learning stations and passing the CPR and AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test, a Megacode test, and a written test.
- Certification
- Upon successful completion of this course students will be issued with an Irish Heart Foundation / American Heart Association credit card sized certificate. This cert will be valid for 2 years. It should also be noted that as this course is certified by both the Irish Heart Foundation & American Heart Association it is recognised internationally.
- Renewal
- In order to maintain you qualification after your two-year certification period you will be required to undertake a renewal course.
- Blended Learning
- HeartCode ACLS Part 1 requires prior knowledge that will be applied in using the Advanced Cardiac Life Support treatment algorithms. Unprepared or inexperienced students may require additional time to complete HeartCode ACLS Part 1. To be successful in any ACLS course, students should be able to identify ECG rhythms and should know pharmacology specific to cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies before beginning the course.
HeartCode ACLS Part 1. Upon successful completion of the online portion, including the written exam, students receive a Part 1 certificate of completion, which must be presented for part 2.
Part 2 a hands-on skills practice session with an AHA ACLS Instructor.
